In the last edition of Great Lakes News, we discussed some of the problems facing Quebec’s wastewater system. Overcoming these challenges can be met by a mix of infrastructure upgrades and ‘green’ solutions that prevent rainwater from reaching overburdened storm sewers.

Why the compact is a win

When U.S. President Bush signed his approval of the Great Lakes Compact, a few groups and individuals across the region feared the commercialization of Great Lakes water. Sarah Miller, researcher with the Canadian Environmental Law Association, puts these arguments to rest, explaining why the Compact does not threaten to commercialize water, and why it must be celebrated as a win for the region.

The dramatic decline of the American eel

The American eel, a species native to the Great Lakes, is on the verge of collapse throughout much of its habitat. This collapse has occurred alarmingly fast and is especially strong at the far reaches of the eel’s range, which includes the Great Lakes. American eels are at or near the lowest recorded levels of abundance and scientists fear that the spawning stock has declined so dramatically that recovery at the edges of its range may not be possible.
