Green Chemistry and the State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference
 |
Great Lakes United is excited to be sponsoring a green chemistry workshop at the upcoming State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC). Green chemistry is an approach to chemistry that minimizes the use and generation of hazardous substances. Offering environmentally-safe alternatives to hazardous chemicals, green chemistry is an approach to pollution preventation that begins at the molecular level. Considering the Great Lakes Region history of chemical production, there seems no better place to cultivate a greener approach to chemical engineering. To discuss and facilitate this workshop GLU is honoured to have Dr. John Warner of the Center for Green Chemistry at UMASS Lowell provide the keynote for this workshop. |
SOLEC will be held November 1-3 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The green chemistry workshop is scheduled for November 3. For more information on SOLEC or to register, visit www.solecregistration.ca.
Climate Change
Climate change contributes to water quality issues in the Great Lakes. Water levels affected by climate destabilization increase the likelihood of intensified pollution

Review of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement
Participate in the Review
of the Great Lakes Water Quality
Agreement:
In May 2006, The US House
of Representatives made a
giant stride in the effort
to preserve the public’s
right to know about toxic
pollution. The House passed
the Pallone-Solis Toxic Right-To-Know
Amendment to the Interior
Appropriations Bill by a wide
margin of 231 to 187. The
amendment protects public
health and safety by preventing
the EPA from rolling back
reporting requirements to
the Toxics
Release Inventory (TRI)
program.
Great Lakes United engaged
in efforts led by OMB Watch
along with US PIRG, LCV and
many other groups around the
country including public health
officials, state agencies,
emergency responders, workers,
environmentalists, and American
citizens rallying in support
of the amendment to preserve
the TRI reporting
requirements.
