Key environmental groups in Canada and the United States, that deal daily with Great Lakes water quality and environmental issues are calling on their respective governments and the International Joint Commission (IJC) on Great Lakes Water Quality to bring back a Nuclear Task Force that will report on nuclear contamination and dangers in the Great Lakes.

ANN ARBOR, MICH. (July 13, 2012)—Yesterday the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canadian released a study affirming that all five Great Lakes are hospitable to Asian carp and that once established the non-native fish will likely disrupt the native fishery, alter the ecosystem and create another food web. The study found that it would take as few as 10 female and 10 or fewer male Asian carp of reproductive age to reproduce in the Great Lakes.

Environmental groups ready to work with all parties to protect the lakes

An alliance of Great Lakes environmental groups applauds the Ontario government’s draft Great Lakes Strategy, released today in Toronto. The groups also welcome the government's proposal for a Great Lakes Protection Act. The Act and strategy aim to address some of the biggest problems facing the Great Lakes.  Among the strategy’s focuses are: water quality; beaches, coastal wetlands and biodiversity; and sustaining economic activity.
