THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Great Lakes United members advocate the removal
of the 5.5 miles of four lanes of concrete Robert Moses Parkway between Niagara Falls, New York, and Lewiston, New York, and the land be restored with trees, long-grass wildflower meadows in accord wirh Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux's philosophy of natural parks, to be complemented by gorgetop hiking and biking trails to run the entire length.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Great Lakes go on record in favor of an extensive program to bring native fish populations up to levels supportable by the forage base through restoration, and that further stocking of non-native fish species be annually reduced until final elimination of such stocking is achieved.

Therefore be it resolved that Great Lakes United urges the state, provincial and First Nations governments of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River basin to institute a moratorium on the siting fo new high-capacity groundwater wells within the basin until the governments have put into law and regulation:
1. A comprehensive means for assessing the ecological impacts of groundwater removal by high-capacity wells and,
2. A standard for judging the acceptability of such groundwater removal operations of “no significant harm” without reference to mitigation and,
3. A system of both indemnification and compensation for any harm that may at some
future time be discovered to have been caused by such groundwater removal operations.

Therefore be it resolved that Great Lakes United and its member organizations
implement the following strategies: Urge the immediate passage of federal legislation banning new oil and gas drilling in the Great Lakes and directional drilling under the Great Lakes; and, continue to seek a permanent moratorium on drilling on a statewide and provincewide basis.

Therefore be it resolved that Great Lakes United: Congratulates Canada and applauds its action to become the first country to ratify the
Stockholm Convention on POPs; Urges President Bush, through his staff and advisors, to expeditiously transmit the POPs Treaty to the US Senate for its “advice and consent” to ratification; Urges the United States Senate to ratify the Stockholm Convention in this first session of the 107th Congress so that the United States will also be one of the early countries to ratify the Convention and set an example of leadership for other countries to follow.

Therefore be it resolved that Great Lakes United calls for a moratorium on new permits for sunken log extraction in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin.
Be it further resolved that Great Lakes United calls for environmentally sound scientific criteria for the issuance of permits across the wide range of aquatic habitats in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin.

Therefore be it resolved that Great Lakes United request the United States and Canadian governments to negotiate a new agreement on Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River
biodiversity and habitat for the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes-St.
Lawrence River ecosystem.

BE IT RESOLVED, that Great Lakes United is on record as opposing any and all legislation which would override the State of Nevada’s Notice of Disapproval and which would require radioactive waste transportation near or through the Great Lakes states to Yucca Mountain;

And BE IT RESOLVED, that Great Lakes United supports the creation of an independent presidential commission to re examine the U.S. national radioactive waste policy.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Great Lakes United calls upon the Canadian Government to halt construction of the new high level radioactive waste storage facility at the Bruce nuclear complex until such time the above concerns are fully addressed complete with meaningful and thorough public hearings in Michigan and the United States; and BE IT ALSO RESOLVED that Great Lakes United reconfirms our previous resolutions calling upon the U.S. and Canadian Governments to begin to immediately phase out all nuclear power plants within the Great Lakes Basin, and to utilize and research less ecologically devastating forms of energy, including but not limited to energy conservation, energy efficiency, solar and wind energy.

Therefore be it resolved that Great Lakes United approach both federal governments and request in the strongest terms possible that the International Joint Commission establish with the utmost dispatch a bilateral Lake Huron Outflow Monitoring Board for water quantity;and, Therefore be it further resolved that Great Lakes United recommend to the International Joint Commission that the new Lake Huron Outflow Monitoring Board include at least one member who possesses a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem management.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Canadian government, and specifically the Minister of Natural Resources, and the agency under the Minister's direction, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, introduce and support legislation to make generators keep their intermediate grade radioactive waste safe-guarded at point of origin.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Great Lakes United calls on the U.S. Congress to immediately stop the Great Lakes Navigation System review, and calls on the Canadian Government to withhold financial or administrative support to the said study.
